What a Personal Brand REALLY Is

Anytime you use the word “brand,” people tend to think of business. They think of logos, slogans, ads and packaging.

But a personal brand is something quite different. A personal brand is the experience of you.

It doesn’t matter what your business or industry is, and it doesn’t matter what your logo or slogan is.

Your personal brand is what people think and say about you when you are not in the room.

It’s the feeling people get when you are around, and even the feeling that stays with people after you have left the room. It’s the feeling someone gets when they are asked about you or thinks of you. It’s what comes to mind that describes the experience of you.

List some people you know on a piece of paper; family members, friends, and business associates. How would you describe each of their personal brands. As you look at each name, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? The words that come to you without you having to think too hard, are their personal brands. It’s the experience of them.

Some might be kind and giving, while others might be a bit selfish or protective. One might be someone who always brings humor and levity to situations. You will recognize which people bring positive energy, and which ones are draining. One might be a good listener, a…
